Drama Queen

Jumping-bean actor Sean Power brings to life Rubinoff's tale of Jack, the ultimate loser, gracing his otherwise boorish beat-poet drifter with a healthy glow.

Stuck

Is giving blowjobs for marijuana cigarettes the lowest you can possibly sink, or is it just a blip in the cosmos of cool? David Rubinoff and his terminally hip play Stuck seem to thinkit down the middle, as the main character digresses on his course toward a gay slob's Pulp Fiction. This critically acclaimed performance piece from Toronto smells like maple leaves but snaps into the Manhattan chic consiousness like a method actor's Lego. Jumping-bean actor Sean Power brings to life Rubinoff's tale of Jack, the ultimate loser, gracing his otherwise boorish beat-poet drifter with a healthy glow. Jack's goals are to find pot, money and sex, but mostly he finds a procession of quirky characters, from confused Christians to candy-loving loonies. Most of his encounters lead nowhere, but the aimlessness is rather entertaining for a time. If only those pesky moments of Rubinoff's Kerouac-inspired raving didn't occasionally sneak in. The ending virtually floats away. Luckily, he's got the Energizer bunny for a lead, an actor who can make the most confusing, verbose passages sound like romantic language. He keeps the dialogue motorized even when Stuck lives up to its name.
